Chain Stitch Hemming on a Vintage Union Special

Studio D’Artisan jeans are finished with a traditional chain stitch hem, not a modern single stitch.

This detail reflects vintage American workwear construction and remains essential to authentic selvedge denim.

For hemming, we use a rare American-made vintage Union Special machine. Each alteration is completed using the original chain stitch method, preserving the character and integrity of the garment.

Jeans hemmed on a Union Special develop a distinctive roping effect over time - subtle twisting and raised fading along the hem as the denim ages. With wear and washing, this textured fade becomes more pronounced, a visible mark of traditional construction.

This is not decoration, but a structural detail that reveals itself gradually through use.
