Raw Denim Fading & Care Guide
How to Wash Studio D’Artisan Jeans
Personal Fading. Natural Contrast.
Raw selvedge denim develops character through wear.
As you move, sit, and walk, the fabric creases naturally at stress points. Over time, these areas fade, creating patterns known as:
-
Whiskers (thigh creases)
-
Honeycombs (creases behind the knees)
Wearing your jeans for an extended period before washing will increase contrast and create sharper fades.
However, there is no single correct approach. Some customers prefer high-contrast fading. Others wash more regularly for comfort and hygiene. Both methods are valid. The character of the denim will simply develop differently.
MAINTENANCE
How to Wash Raw Denim Jeans
1. Preparation
Close all buttons and zippers to help maintain shape during washing. Turn the jeans inside out before washing.
Washing inside out helps preserve indigo dye, reduces surface abrasion, and supports more natural fading over time.
2. Removing Starch (For New Raw Denim)
New raw denim may contain residual starch (sizing) from the weaving process.
To soften the fabric and allow for natural shrinkage:
-
Soak in lukewarm water (40–60°C / 104–140°F)
-
Soak for approximately one hour
-
No detergent required
This step is especially recommended for unsanforized or rigid denim.
3. Washing
Place the jeans inside out in the washing machine.
-
Wash with plenty of water
-
Cold to warm water is recommended
-
Water-only washing is acceptable
-
If detergent is used, choose a mild detergent designed for denim
Avoid bleach, strong detergents, or fabric softeners.
How often should you wash raw denim?
This depends on climate, frequency of wear, and personal preference. Some customers wash every few weeks. Others wait several months. There is no strict rule.
4. Drying
After washing:
-
Smooth out wrinkles
-
Reshape seams and legs
-
Adjust the leather patch if needed
Hang dry inside out in a well-ventilated area.
Avoid tumble drying, as high heat may damage the leather patch and cause unnecessary shrinkage.
FAQ – Raw Denim Care
How often should I wash raw denim?
There is no universal schedule.
Washing less frequently may produce stronger contrast fading. Washing more regularly maintains comfort and hygiene. Both approaches are acceptable.
Will washing ruin my fades?
No. Washing simply softens contrast and slows fade progression. It does not erase character already formed.
Should I dry clean raw denim?
Dry cleaning is not recommended for regular care. Water washing is sufficient and more natural for cotton denim.
