16oz Heavy Duty Battle Jeans [D1949]

In the early 1940s, during World War II in America, there was a need to concentrate national resources to support the war effort.

As part of this, the Wartime Production Board imposed strict regulations on the manufacturing of civilian consumer goods, including clothing. In particular, cotton and metal parts (rivets, buttons, etc.) used in garments were prioritized for military use, significantly impacting workwear such as jeans. Under the board’s guidance, luxurious details were thoroughly eliminated, leading to specification changes such as simplified rivets, removal of rivets from watch pockets, and the use of printed (painted) arcuate stitching. As a result, jeans were greatly simplified into practical, rugged wartime designs. Additionally, because many skilled tailors were mobilized for military production, it was common for less experienced workers to be assigned to jean sewing lines. This often led to rough sewing quality, with uneven stitches and distortions, which were not uncommon. Since even repairs were restricted, these flaws were shipped as-is in the final products.

Reflecting this wartime context, we have meticulously recreated the rough, utilitarian sewing specifications and simplified details of that era. We intentionally reproduce uneven stitchwork and “imperfections” in the specifications, translating the oxidized, muted indigo blue color and the characteristic rough texture of the time into the specially prepared 16.0oz selvedge denim used for these jeans.

The tack buttons are made of iron with a laurel leaf design, which will develop natural rust over time. The silhouette is a regular straight fit, model 101.
