Made with D’ARTISAN’s original 13.5oz “Ishikawadai Denim.” This denim prioritizes texture and authenticity over efficiency, reflecting our deep commitment to quality.
‘Ishikawadai’ refers to a ring spinner manufactured by Ishikawa Seisakusho Co., Ltd. in 1953, which is the oldest Japanese ring spinning machine still in operation today. Records from the manufacturer are unavailable, but it is believed to be the oldest functioning ring spinning machine in Japan. Compared to modern machines, its speed is about one-third, slowly spinning yarn at a gentle pace, resulting in lower productivity. However, this gentler process places less stress on the cotton, preserving its natural softness, creating a unique, hand-spun-like texture with subtle irregularities that cannot be replicated by computers.
The cotton used is “Deep South Cotton” grown in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, the southernmost part of Texas bordering Mexico. This cotton, nurtured by the American soil, is mature with thick, robust fibers, offering strength and resilience. It is the perfect material for achieving a rough and dry texture with excellent durability.
The warp yarns are dyed indigo while preserving the unique character of this cotton, omitting the usual yarn refining process. Inspired by vintage denim from the 1950s, the dyeing method intentionally creates uneven indigo coloring. To faithfully reproduce denim from 1953, every step is carried out using low-tech, traditional techniques.
Products crafted from the “Ishikawadai Denim,” spun using the Ishikawadai machine, develop rich aging and unique fades through wear, breathing new life into them as a new generation of vintage wear.
