It began with monks' ceremonial robes and samurai wearing it as formal attire,

and in the Edo period, to express a deep black,

techniques called 'Beni-shita' and 'Ai-shita' were introduced,

where the fabric was pre-dyed with red or indigo during the sumi-zome process.

Black dyeing requires a deep color,

and based on the unique intuition developed by the dye artisans' skills and years of experience,

the temperature of the dye is subtly adjusted,

and the fabric is dyed repeatedly, raising and lowering it dozens of times.
