The history of Kyoto Black Patterned Dye dates back to the Heian period.

During this time, fabric was dyed with ink, known as ink dyeing.

It began with monks wearing it as ceremonial robes and samurai donning it as formal attire,

and in the Edo period, to express a deep black, techniques called

'Beni-shita' and 'Ai-shita' were introduced, where the fabric was pre-dyed with red or indigo during the ink dyeing process.

Black dyeing requires a deep color,

and based on the unique intuition developed through the skills and years of experience of dye artisans,

the temperature of the dye is subtly adjusted,

and the fabric is dyed repeatedly by raising and lowering it dozens of times.
